Leonardi gave Roma the lead after eleven minutes. Ian Lawson equalised for Leeds after thirty-four minutes but Leonardi put the home side into the lead five minutes before half -time. There were no further goals in the second half and Roma ran out 2-1 winners. The home side man several changes as Alfio Fontana was replaced by fellow defender Orvar Bergmark, whose position was taken over by Giulio Corsini and Egidio Guarnacci replaced Paulo Pestrin. The game was played as part of the consideration paid by A.S. Roma for the purchase of John Charles from Leeds United earlier in that season. He had returned to Leeds in the 1962 summer from Juventus for £53,000 but could not settle, and, on 2nd November 1962, Roma agreed to pay £65,000 plus a further £5,000 which would be generated by a friendly game between the two clubs. John Charles received a £15,000 signing on fee.
